US Recruiting Guidelines

In the 2025-2026 academic year, the Jackman Law Career Development Office (CDO) observed that the shift in timeframe of the 2L US Recruit (which effectively moved from Spring/Summer after a candidate’s 1L year to the Fall/Winter term of a candidate’s 1L year) placed an unprecedented amount of pressure on participating law students’ wellness, ability to engage fully in academics and extracurriculars, and opportunity to consider all career opportunities available to them.

Having reviewed NALP’s Principles for a Fair and Ethical Recruitment Process as well as the private sector employer recruiting policies and guidelines of US law schools, the CDO is piloting a set of recruiting guidelines that apply to US firms and candidates participating in US recruiting.

The purpose of these guidelines is to ensure that our law students are able to pursue their legal studies and law school extracurriculars meaningfully while benefitting from the wide range of career opportunities available to them, and to provide clarity to students and employers about our Faculty’s approach to recruitment processes.
