Former DLS client“Thank you for all your hard work and time in our case against our former landlord. Thanks to you we settled out of court. It’s because of people like you that the little guys in the world have a fighting chance.”
What We Do
We assist tenants in rental housing with a broad range of legal issues including:
- Rent disputes;
- Repair and maintenance issues;
- Harassment;
- Illegal charges;
- Eviction (by referral only);
- Human Rights issues related to housing;
- Enforcement of compensatory housing orders in Small Claims Court.
We can assist tenants in raising concerns, negotiating with the landlord and in applications before the Landlord and Tenant Board and the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.
What We Don't Do
At this time, we are only accepting new eviction cases by referral. If you are dealing with an eviction application, please contact your local community legal clinic.
We do not assist social housing tenants with issues covered by the Housing Services Act, 2011 related to rent geared-to-income subsidy (e.g. subsidy overpayment determinations, income and asset reviews, transfer requests). For assistance with an RGI-related issue, please contact your local community legal clinic.
We do not provide legal assistance to landlords, and cannot assist tenants in disputes with other tenants.
If you are a full-time undergraduate student at the University of Toronto, you may be eligible for summary advice about housing law at our drop-in clinic. Find out more.
