Abstract
Justice Mahmud Jamal will explore collegial decision-making at the Supreme Court of Canada from a historical and comparative perspective. Drawing on his experience on Canada’s highest court and extensive legal practice, Justice Jamal will discuss the processes and principles that guide judicial deliberation and decision-making in complex constitutional and legal matters.
Biography
Justice Mahmud Jamal was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada on July 1, 2021. Prior to his appointment, he served on the Court of Appeal for Ontario and practised law for over 23 years at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, appearing before the Supreme Court of Canada in 35 appeals. Justice Jamal has taught constitutional and administrative law, served as a director or trustee for multiple legal organizations, and has published extensively. He holds law degrees from McGill University and Yale Law School and is a senior fellow at Massey College, University of Toronto.
